How long does it take to train lockpicking from 95.0-GM via Dungeon chests?

Hello UO:R,

I would like to get a rough estimation of how long it will take to GM lockpicking to decide wether I will try it or not. Since nowadays I have limited time for playing I would like to avoid realizing after days of trying that I cannot achieve it. So here is how I would like to approach it:

Let's assume I have marked runes to all 28 level 4 and approx 22 more level 3 dungeons chests. Every evening I make one round and open all 50 chests. What is your estimation how long it will take me to reach GM lockpicking from 95.0?

a) a couple of days
b) 2 weeks
c) 1 month
d) 1-3 months
e) 3+ months

ps.: I found a post on UOF where somebody said "I'd say it probably took me closer to 500 chests to go 95-GM". But I don't know how comparable the skill gains on UOF and UOR are. If this would be true it would take me approx. 10 days.

Day 5: +0,4 ~3 runs* to 98.0/97.9
Day 6: +0,6 ~5-6 runs* to 98.6/98.6
Day 7: +0,4 ~4 runs* to 99.0/99.0
Day 8: +0,7 ~4 runs* to 99.7/99.7
Day 9: +0,3 ~4 runs to 100.0/100.0

DONE!

I made around 350k gp and I only looted around 70% of the chests



*1 run means I go trough 27 lvl 4 chests. Sometimes I have to skip chests because they did not respawn yet or are already opened. I also loot basically everything via macro and sell it for shitloads of money via marked runes at NPCs and sell macro. This streches the time a little so that the chests can respawn and I basically can do the run endlessly. I would assume that I get 3-4k gp every 2-3 chests O_O. I would esitmate that it takes ~30 minutes to do one full run.

2 - 4 weeks if you do a daily run.

I GMd two times and it was like 1-2 weeks of several complete lvl4 chest runs a day.

I am not sure how effective lvl3s are. It's most likely better to restart the lvl4 directly. And I had no competition from others.

What is the respawn rate of those chests? On UODUIDE.com they state that "Dungeon spawn chests have a life span of 9 or 10 minutes."

If that is the case as well on UOR I could easily do 2-3 runs per evening achieving GM LP like you in 1-2 weeks.

1.- Forget lvl 3 chests. You won’t gain from them.
2.- From what I’ve talked to other people it takes between 800-1,000 lvl 4 chests to GM.
3.- If you take gold, gems and scrolls and sell them, you’ll end up with 500-600k gold by the time you GM.
4.- No clue on respawn rate, but it does seem longer than 10 minutes. Way longer as in closer to 30-45 minutes.

Like Pirul said, but more complicated. Some of them respawn in 15-20min, some take 30-40 min.

That's the only reason why I added 6-8 lvl3 chests to my cycle. I was too quick for the lvl4 alone.

Question out of ignorance: how do you know what is a level 4 chest and what is a level 3 chest?

When you hit 95 shown LPing you will fail on lvl 4 chests. You will not fail on lvl 3 chests.

No real way to tell as far as I'm aware, aside from having runebooks to known lvl 4 chests. You're likely to fail on a lvl 4 chest at least a few times, though you could feasibly get lucky and get it on the first try.

Mutombo says in his guide the following:

" If the chest has around 200 gold and no arrows then it is a level four chest. If it has around 200 gold and contains arrows it is a level three chest. Arrows are number one identifier between level threes and fours so look for them!"

I'm not entirely sure that still applies. Try any of the 3 rune libraries KoS has, and you'll find books to all the lvl 4 chests.

I did 3-4 chests before work every day for the better part of a year to GM lockpicking here. My experience aligns with @Pirul 's estimate of 800-1000 L4 chests.

It's really hard to believe I did 800-1000 chests in 4 or 5 days. I mean I may have, so those numbers could be correct.

I used the cove fort library books, opened gate, went invisible, hit stealth, go in and had a restock on them so quick sometimes I caught the same gate back.

It takes dedication to GM 1 LPer. You need to be a little insane to GM 2.

I can tell you beyond any reasonable doubt, there ARE arrows in lvl 4 chests.
