You need animal lore so your pet will follow commands. In order to bond the animal your animal taming has to be at or above the level to tame the animal you are trying to bond, this is real skill not shown skill.

everyone riding a mare has animal taming that high correct, and by training animal taming you also train animal lore, so yes they do. Asking questions is how you learn...lots of things I still dont know about this game, but that's part of the fun of playing, figuring them out!
